Diving Deep into Ocean Conservation
Alina Pryazhkina Rogers is a dedicated marine biologist whose deep love for animals and the ocean has shaped her career. “I don’t think I can ever live without the ocean and the animals that live in it,” says Alina, reflecting on her journey from volunteering with terrestrial wildlife to finding her true calling in marine biology. Her journey brought her to South Africa, where she first visited Hans Bay in 2013, and since then, she has felt a deep connection with the marine world. “This place just got my heart,” she recalls of her first visit.
At Marine Dynamics, Alina is immersed in hands-on conservation and research, contributing to projects aimed at protecting marine life. One of the most rewarding aspects of her work involves the African penguin and seabird sanctuary. Alina is directly involved in rehabilitating injured birds, ensuring they gain the strength needed to be returned to the wild. “We rehabilitate them, feed them, and help them regain their energy so they can get back to where they belong,” she says with pride..
Alina’s role also involves research on the “Marine Big Five” — whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, and the African penguin. The company emphasizes conservation by conducting whale-watching tours with strict regulations to ensure the animals are not disturbed. “When it comes to whale watching, we are assigned certain areas where we can go, and there are strict rules. We can’t approach them closer than 15 meters,” Alina explains. This ensures the safety and well-being of the animals while allowing guests to witness these majestic creatures up close.
Marine Dynamics, established in 2000, is a leader in marine eco-tourism, providing the public with the chance to experience the wonders of South Africa’s oceans. Through their various tours, the company not only offers an unforgettable adventure but also contributes to vital research and conservation. Alina highlights the importance of public involvement: “A lot of proceeds go straight back into the wildlife and into educating people, not just the visitors, but also local communities.”
The company’s efforts go beyond just showcasing wildlife. Marine Dynamics actively supports marine conservation projects and scientific research. Alina shares, “We are able to collect data that helps us understand more about the animals and the ecosystems we’re working to protect.” The research that takes place at Marine Dynamics is essential for understanding marine biodiversity and contributing to global conservation efforts.
For Alina, being part of this initiative is both a privilege and a responsibility. “Everything that matters is just to be on that boat, part of the research and conservation, and to take people out to see the beauty of our local oceans,” she reflects. Through her work, Alina continues to inspire others to appreciate and protect the marine world, leaving a lasting impact on both her guests and the broader conservation community.
